Key takeaways

  • Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence
  • Your primary category and treatment list matter more than most owners think
  • Fresh photos and a steady flow of genuine reviews build prominence
  • Never add keywords to your business name; it breaks Google's guidelines

Why Google Maps matters so much for spas

Most spa bookings start with a local search on a phone. Google answers searches like "spa near me" or "ayurvedic massage near me" with a map and a short list of businesses, often before any website appears. The spas in that list get most of the calls, direction requests and website visits.

The listing that appears is your Google Business Profile. It is free to own, but it only performs when it is complete, accurate and active. That makes it the single most valuable marketing asset most spas have.

How Google decides which spas to show

Google says local results are based mainly on three things. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the person searching. Prominence is how well known and trusted your business is, which includes reviews and mentions across the web.

You can't move your spa closer to every searcher, but you can control relevance and prominence completely. That is where the work goes.

Step 1: get your categories right

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals. Choose the one that best describes your main business, such as Spa, Day spa or Massage spa. Then add secondary categories only where they genuinely apply, for example a facial spa or Ayurvedic clinic if you really offer those services.

Check which primary category the top three spas in your area use. If yours is different, it may be why you're not showing up.

Step 2: list every treatment

Add each treatment as a service with a short, plain description and a starting price where you can. Abhyanga, deep tissue massage, couple massage, body polish and facials should each have their own entry. This helps Google match your spa to specific searches, and helps guests decide faster.

Step 3: add real photos, regularly

Upload photos of your reception, treatment rooms, products and team, and keep adding new ones every month. Real photos build far more trust than stock images, and an active profile looks like an active business. Keep every image professional and calm; spa photos should never look suggestive.

Step 4: build reviews the right way

Reviews are a big part of prominence and the main thing guests compare. Ask every happy guest for a review, at the right moment, with a direct link. Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and briefly.

  • Send the review link after the visit, for example on WhatsApp
  • Train reception to ask at checkout
  • Never buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange for them
  • Answer negative reviews calmly and offer to resolve things offline

Step 5: keep the profile active

Post updates, offers and new treatments to your profile regularly, keep holiday hours accurate and answer questions in the Q&A section. Link your website and booking page so guests can act straight away. A fast spa website also helps Google understand your business.

Mistakes that hold spas back

If your spa has several branches, each one needs its own verified profile, photos and reviews. For a wider plan, see our guide to spa marketing or, in Bangalore, spa marketing in Bangalore.

  • Adding words like "best spa" to the business name, which can get the profile suspended
  • A vague primary category or a missing treatment list
  • Old photos and unanswered reviews
  • Different addresses or phone numbers across the web
  • Setting the profile up once and never touching it again
